Cognition

Learning, especially for humans, is a great evolutionary advantage. Also known as cognition, learning can be achieved through different methods. These methods include reinforcement and punishment, classical conditioning, and operant conditioning. Things that are learned are stored in the memory.

Ramachandran

One of Ramachandran's more famous experiments is the "phantom limb". A phantom limb is a psychological phenomenon that happens when a amputee have feelings and sensations in their missing limb. Phantom limb patients would often report an intense clenching feeling in their non-existent hand or feeling sensations in their missing limb when another part of the body is stimulated. To resolve this problem, Ramachandran used a mirror box.

Reproduction

I'm not quite sure exactly what I learned about reproduction in class. I guess I learned more about the psychological and physiological mechanisms of reproduction.

Reproductive System Dissection

After seeing this dissection, the last video is starting to seem very tolerable. I had witnessed a man getting castrated and a woman getting her ovaries pulled out of her. That guy with the hat still seems suspicious, he looks like he enjoys cutting people's testicles off. I didn't learned much from the video because i couldn't bear to watch it. I guess I learned how it looks like to get castrated.

Urine as a Diagnostic Tool

Urine can used to measure ones health in many ways. It can be checked for color, specific gravity, and salinity. Diseases like bladder infections can be detected through urine. Darker colors and higher density means inadequate amounts of water.

Pig Dissection

While mildly disgusting, the fetal dissection was interesting and fun. At first I was confused about what parts to cut, but it was no longer a problem later on. I found it interesting that we were dissecting and examining something that had anatomical similarities to a human being.

Digestive System Video

The dissection video was quite disturbing. I could not help but to think that the guy with the hat had killed someone the day before and used them for the video. I learned all the parts of the digestive system- where the food travels and where it is broken down and absorbed. It was interesting to see the whole digestive system elongated, as it was longer than I had expected.

Protecting Digestion

Digestion can be protected mainly by altering ones diet. Foods that are fibrous can be beneficial in cleaning the digestive tract. Bacteria from yogurt can also be good for the stomach. Managing what is put into the digestive system is the best way to protect digestion.

Protection From Diseases

The best protection from diseases is knowledge. The spread of infectious diseases can be prevented if people are more aware of how diseases are transferred from person to person and how dangerous they are. Although viral diseases cannot be cured, many of them can be prevented from the use of vaccines. Safe sex methods are effective in preventing being infected by an STD.

Allergies

An allergy is caused by the malfunction of the immune response to foreign or familiar substances. It occurs when a particular substance such as peanuts is mistaken by the immune system to be malicious. In defense, irritation, itching, and swelling occurs.

Disease Video

The movie was very interesting because it related to Mr. Hyke's lesson about pests and pesticides. The video talked about malaria and other diseases and what could be done about it. In my environmental class we learned about getting rid of pests and using pesticides and other methods to exterminate them. Although most methods provide an immediate, short term solution, it has long term effects such as the pests or diseases building genetic resistance through natural selection. This means that as DDT (also damaging to human health and the environment) is being used in Africa to prevent the spread of malaria, the mosquitos will eventually become immune to the pesticide. This will create a stronger generation of mosquitos, leaving the negative effects of DDT.

Breathing

Three ways breathing can change are apnea, sleep apnea, and hypernea. Apnea is a sudden stoppage of breathing caused by choking. Sleep apnea occurs during sleep and can be deadly. Hypernea is the increase of breathing rate caused by physical stress or emotional stress like exercise or anxiety.

The Cardiovascular System

The cardiovascular system is very complicated and extends throughout the whole body. The main function of the cardiovascular system is the transfer of blood which distributes oxygen to all the organs and maintains body temperature. I wish to understand processes and functions of the heart.

Diet Plan

My diet plan has been going quiet decent. I haven't been following the plan as well, mostly with the food. I am actually enjoying the exercising, it actually makes me feel good and more energetic afterward. Jogging is fun, I think I might still do it frequently even after this project. I do feel as if I improved, I think my strength has improved and compared to my first time jogging I am running better. The only things I am neglecting on my plan is the diet, I am not finding it easy to follow specific food plan.
